Cambium Carbon

Ep. 5 what happens when a tree falls in a city?

What happens when a tree falls in a city? It often gets sent to a landfill. Cambium Carbon is on a mission to change that - they’ve developed a circular economy platform that enables a fallen tree to be turned into something useful.

Why We Made this Film

Consider this: 36 million trees come down in cities every year. That’s more than what topples in our national forests. Since most of these trees are sent to landfills or chipped on-site, much of that economic value—around $26 billion—is lost.

These stats were quite surprising when we first chatted with Ben Christensen, the CEO/Co-Founder of Cambium Carbon. Christensen brings these fallen trees to local woodshops to be transformed into desks, cutting boards, bed frames, and more. It’s a global solution that enables circularity on a local level.

This story is a reminder that climate solutions don’t always require some big scientific breakthrough. Sometimes, it’s simply about recognizing both waste and opportunity in our current systems.
